Concept- Ch.2

The concept of “Relabeling” in chapter 2 is very useful for me. It explains that replacing a negative word or feeling with a positive word or thought will help ease anxiety. Most of the time when I get nervous, I tend to say to myself, “stop being nervous” which never helps because it makes me even more nervous. So by telling myself when I am nervous that, “im very excited” makes it more of a positive feeling. I understand that it wont instantly go away but hopefully it will help ease the nerves.

I guess it is all in how you think about the experience. This chapter also mentions that if we think public speaking is chore, we most likely will not be excited about it but if we think that public speaking gives us a chance to express our ideas and get feedback from an audience, we will be more enthusiastic about public speaking. Even though its still a challenge for me, I will try replacing negative words for optimistic words.

  1. Hfon,

I would have to agree with this post, particularly with the second concerning the idea that speeches allow us to present our own opinion and ideas, and not just through an essay either.

I once had an opportunity to create a persuasive essay about any type of art out there. The project consisted of coming up with something that may or may not retain to art, and explain why it is art to yourself. I focused on hip-hop culture in general, and specifically focused on the hip-hop music culture being undermined by the media.

When my teacher had explained the requirements for the speech and essay, it really did make me happy to finally portray an image, that has been sculpted by the media, for how it really was. I had begun playing what I considered "real hip-hop music," and told them the difference between what is heard on radio and what is heard by the streets. Which also led to the fact that media always saw hip-hop as a genre of violence, drugs and sex when in reality, it was only rapped this way by mainstream artists.

Anyways, I seem to have gone too much into it again, but with that, you can see how it really is exciting to say something that you normally wouldn't say in front of your friends or others. I encourage you to go ahead and be excited about what you say, no matter what it is, because you never know, you can convince a few, or a lot of people, to be swayed, and there's nothing like the feeling of convincing people of your opinion.
